  29. What you are meant to do is to rename (or better link) plain.fmt to tex.fmt ,
  30. and similarly link virtex to tex .
  31. When you run abctex it looks for the format file abctex.fmt 
  32. (ie with the same name, and extension .fmt).

  34. If you had used Karl Berry's unixtex distribution,
  35. this would have been done automatically for you.

  37. As to where to store the format files,
  38. this depends entirely on the implementation.
  39. The default with unixtex is /usr/local/lib/texmf/ini .

  41. You can probably over-ride the directory 
  42. by setting the environment variable TEXFORMATS (or possibly TEXFMTS).
